MARTIN PURYEAR: NEW SCULPTURE

The MCKEE GALLERY will open an exhibition of the new work of Martin Puryear on Thursday, April 25, which will continue until Friday, June 21, 2002.

This will be Puryear's first solo exhibition in New York in 7 years and will include 4 large new sculptures in wood, and 3 prints.

A museum exhibition of 12 recent sculptures has just closed, having traveled to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Miami Art Museum, Berkeley Art Museum, and the Des Moines Art Center. A previous large retrospective organized by the Art Institute of Chicago in 1991-92 traveled to the Hirshhorn Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 1997 The Fundacion La Caixa in Madrid mounted his first European retrospective exhibition.

Martin Puryear was born in 1941 in Washington, D.C. He studied at the Catholic University there, joined the Peace Corps in 1964-66 in Sierra Leone, and lived in Stockholm for 2 years. He received his MFA in Sculpture from Yale University in 1971. Among many awards, he has received the Grand Prize of the Sao Paulo Bienal and the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship Award in 1989.

The exhibition opening will be on Thursday, April 25, 6-8 pm.
